Volunteer Opportunities
FLS sometimes can utilize volunteers in our office. They are typically college or high-school students who speak Spanish or are interested in a career in law and would like to experience a law-office setting.
Persons interested in volunteering with FLS should send a resume and cover letter to: Managing Attorney, Farmworker Legal Services, PO Box 219, Bangor, MI, 49013.
The volunteer staff are asked to assist in a wide variety of tasks under the supervision of the Volunteer Coordinator and the legal staff. Most of the tasks assigned are interesting and non-repetitive. No volunteer staff member will be asked to perform any task which is considered dangerous. Volunteer staff may be asked to perform part or all of the following tasks:
Reception and Client Interviewing
Volunteer
staff will greet clients and obtain general information regarding
address and assets, as well as identify eligibility information.
Telephone Coverage
Volunteer staff will be responsible for answering, screening, and routing incoming telephone calls.
Photocopying
Various assignments will involve using the photocopier in large and small jobs.
Filing
Volunteers will assist with filing client files and/or library materials. Normally, only a small amount of filing is necessary.
Typing
Since
most of the staff type their own documents, little typing is required.
However, occasionally a volunteer staff member may be called upon to
assist with a typing assignment.
Miscellaneous
Volunteer
staff will be expected to perform various other tasks and/or projects
within the scope of the office setting as the need arises.
