Education Advocacy for Migrant Parents
Attorney Rebecca Westphal worked with migrant parents from the
Fennville Public Schools in order to improve services to students and
their families. Parents organized a committee with the help of Rebecca
who worked with the administration of Fennville Public Schools to make
sure that parents and their children receive appropriate migrant
education and bilingual education services. It is hoped that organizing
the parents as a group to communicate with the school district will
help resolve concerns in the Fennville Hispanic community.
Equal Justice Fellowship
In September 2002, FLS added an Equal Justice Works (formerly NAPIL)
fellow to, among other tasks, advocate with school administrators,
teachers, and migrant parents to protect migrant children's rights to
equal educational opportunity in Michigan. In conjunction with this
project, FLS staff are active members on a two-year Migrant Education
Needs Assessment committee established by the Michigan Department of
Education.
