End of Season Reminder: Evictions from Migrant Camps
At the end of the season, farmworkers are often told by growers that they must leave the migrant camp immediately. Sometimes the grower threatens to throw them out, call the police, change the locks, or shut off the electricity or gas. Sometimes the grower will not give the worker his last paycheck until they leave.
Farmworkers have the right to stay in their housing until the grower gets a court order signed by a judge that says that the farmworker has to leave. This is a state law that is designed to prevent homelessness and possibly violent encounters. The court process can take as little as a few weeks. In the meantime, the farmworker can look for other housing and be secure in knowing that they will not be thrown out without a decision by a judge.
