Debt Collection Agency Harassment
FLS represented a client who received harassing calls from a Florida
debt collector. The debt collector failed to send her an explanation in
writing verifying her debt, called her repeatedly at work even after
her boss told him not to call, and threatened her family. These acts
violate the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. FLS assisted
the client in filing a lawsuit in federal court against the debt
collector and company that employed him. The case was recently settled
for $4,000.
Cell Phone Contract Dispute
A farmworker paid a $500 cash deposit to a local cell phone
distributor. At the end of a two-year contract, she was told that she
could not get the deposit back because the national service provider
had no record that it ever received the money. The provider refused to
recognize the farmworker’s receipt from the local distributor, or that
fact that her service was, in fact, activated, as proof that the
farmworker paid the deposit. After a great deal of telephone advocacy
by FLS, the farmworker was issued a check for the full amount and
received an apology from the national provider. FLS will assist the
client in filing a complaint with the State of Michigan.
Consumer Fraud by Immigration Attorney
FLS represented a client who paid $2,125 to an immigration attorney who
did not file the applications that he promised he would, and he did not
return our client's money. The State Bar suspended the attorney, and
the State Bar Client Protection Fund returned to our client the amount
that he had paid the attorney. |
