Special Immigrant Juvenile Status Petition
FLS represented an undocumented sixteen year old Honduran client who
was severely abused by her father. She was removed from her father’s
household and placed in foster care. We determined that the client was
eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, which is a special
immigration program that provides that undocumented minors who have
been neglected, abandoned, or abused by their parents can petition for
permanent residency. A juvenile court and/or the immigration agency
must approve and support the petition.
We assisted the client
with submitting the application. She had her interview in Detroit this
summer and was approved for permanent residency. She now has her green
card and can move on with her life to try to get past the abuse that
she suffered.
Our client was suffered extreme physical abuse from her U.S. citizen husband. We helped her to file an immigration petition under the Violence Against Women Act. The Immigration service approved her application. We then helped her apply for work authorization and for permanent residency. She recently received her work authorization card, and her residency application is pending.
